Properties of Light

At once a Gothic suspense novel and a compelling novel of ideas, Properties of Light tells the story of a young physicist who becomes enamored of an obscure equation, of the equation’s creator, and finally of the creator’s beautiful daughter. As the three strive to reconcile quantum mechanics and relativity, they become mired in a destructive triangle of science, love, and mysticism.

“It's one kind of trick to turn philosophy into fiction, as Rebecca Goldstein did so successfully in her highly praised first novel, The Mind Body Problem. It's another, perhaps even headier alchemy, to make fiction out of physics... A novel of cool grace and dark lyricism, lit by the imaginative fire of physics and its improbable cosmologies….“ New York Times Book Review

Dr. Rebecca Goldstein is the author of ten books, most recently, the novel 36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction (2010) and the popular philosophy book, Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won't Go Away (2014). She holds a Ph.D. in philosophy of science, and both her fiction and her non-fiction are informed by this interest. Her many honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant.”

Dr. Goldstein will be joined by Fiction Meets Science literary scholar, Dr. Natalie Roxburgh of Oldenburg University, and physicist Dr. Klaus Mecke, of the Erlangen Center for Literature and Natural Science. Susan M. Gaines, writer-in-residence and the initiator of Fiction Meets Science at the University of Bremen, will provide an introduction.
